The McKenna Legacy: A Drifter Story | 001.5 Building up

Zuri had been enjoying runs along the river. It really took her mind of the stress she'd been feeling lately. She usually went for a jog, down there, after work. Sometimes she would look for frogs and crystals in the rocks, that she could sell in the market. Her savings account was getting pretty nicely stocked.

The day she finally received that promotion at work, she was thrilled. The welcomed raise in her salary was just enough so she could afford the materials to start building her little shack in the desert.
She called Alton to give him the news and he was happy for her. He then told her to call Rodrigo, the contractor, and let him know he could start right away.

The construction work was settled. The house wasn't going to be very big, so Rodrigo told her he could have the house done in about 3 weeks. Meanwhile, she was staying with Alton and Cynthia.
She enjoyed the company. Being surrounded by friends gave her a sense of what was like to have a real family. She barely remembered her parents, they died when she was only 5 years old, so she didn't really had memories of their few family moments.
Zuri cherished every moment she spent with Cynthia and Alton. After her new promotion she now worked the night shift, so she spent her day helping in the store. For her it was a way of repaying the couple, for letting her stay with them while Rodrigo was building her house.
The 3 weeks passed and her house was finally ready. It was a small cube, with only the bare necessities, but she was happy to have a roof over her head.

Alton and Cynthia helped putting the furniture inside, before she had to go to work that day.
After she came from work she was tired, but she was inspired and she started writing a song for her next number.

The next day her bills came. So she had to make some money fast to pay them. Zuri didn't liked to have bills overdue. Sometimes it was hard to keep up with being an adult, but Zuri was a responsible girl and she always kept away from debt.

Her garden was growing well and she was making some extra money from selling the harvest in the market.
Life was good for now but her heart was lingering for some company. She was a romantic after-all.
